Barge Beach is a beach containing 2100m2’s of pools, consisting of a swimming- and children’s pool, made of the cargo bay of an old tow ship, and two barges attached on sides, where there are special bathing features, like „water experience wall”, a bar, and sunbathing deckchairs.
The design concept is based on the idea of creating a public place in the town, which is located in the heart of the city, more precisely on the river Danube that cuts Budapest in two. Just like any other public places, Barge Beach has a duty as an urban place. This is to serve as a meeting point, to give space to citizens, where they can spend time together, have a drink or chat after working hours, or even to organize urban city events.
The structure built on the ship is made of normal containers, using mainly the frame of containers only, forming a bar or just to shade the deck. Visitors can bathe or sunbathe during the day, but after 9 pm it becomes a pleasure-ground, where people can listen to music, dance, and the night bathing can begin.
The idea of Barge Beach first came while working on the tender called „Budapest, European Capital of Culture” in 2005, and was accomplished in 2009, due to the proposal of Judit Z. Halmányi (architect, ZHJ Architecture Office) and Éva Horváth (Sygma Production).
